  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

Claire, you have such an adventurous soul! Kudos for going to the Brawl Room on your own, however, I suppose the gig colors the tone of the place.

I've heard a couple of Bird's songs (Plasticities??)and the music was indeed interesting, very layered as you said.

This made me smile: "He and Tennant have the same body type: tall, skinny with a mop of hair. A type that weakens my moral fiber."

Aren't those reactions interesting... Let's hear it for the weakening of moral fiber!!! :)

Jennifer, click on the Salon link to hear "Heretics."

The Riviera isn't the den of inquity that it used to be, or so I understand. I was just dodging a spectrum of hipsters, from the unwashed to the yuppified.

As for moral fiber, it should be weakened from time to time...

I liked "Heretics".

I don't think I've ever been to a concert by myself -- I've gone to the movies alone -- but, that's different. So, good for you, Claire. Even though it probably would've been fun to have had a friend to discuss that scarf with!

:)

Also, thanks for the link to "Too clever by half." If you remember, I've always been confused about it's true meaning cuz one time someone tried to talk me into that it was a "nice" thing to say to someone.

:)

Hey, no prob, BG. I had used it in a conversation to describe Bird and my two friends were like, "um, what's that supposed to mean?" I had to look it up to make sure I used it correctly.

I have always put "too clever by half" and someone thinking they were too hip for the room in the same category. Maybe too big for their mental britches!
